Some parts of his memoirs can be a bit thin. He will relate where he traveled, the conferences he attended, the names of his colleagues, but not always with enough detail to make the names come to life. These passages aside, this is a fascinating account of a remarkable man's life, told from the inside looking out. Peters was a pioneering advocate of combination drug therapies to delay the evolution of drug resistance in malaria parasites.

He led two of the most prominent tropical disease research centers in the world, along with an important role with the World Health Organization. The memoirs are very honest about the travails of growing old and the pain of losing his beloved wife. Peters is clearly a humble person of enormous compassionate, intelligence, and, in my opinion, wisdom.

Alan Watts: A Conversation with Myself - Part 1

In the chapters after his wife, Ruth, passed away, the listlessness, possibly depression, forgetfulness and loneliness comes thro A very interesting autobiography. The terrain we entered was basically savannah interspersed with clumps of trees and shrubs. We soon encountered several species of deer, large and small feeding quietly or engaging in mock combat.

Only minutes later we encountered our first giraffes of which several subspecies are resident in East Africa. Those shown here are a male and a female of the Masai subspecies. A number of large species of birds also inhabit this savannah, among them the strangely feathered but aptly named Secretary bird, and the African Crowned crane. Ostriches socialised with herds of zebra in the open plain when no predators were in their vicinity. Blue Wildebeests also known as Gnus , either in small groups or herds that intermingle with zebras, undertake mass migrations in areas such as the Serengeti national park in neighbouring Tanzania.

This picture of the black subspecies was taken in the Kenyan savanna. Small family groups of elephants meandered peacefully among their fellow residents and popped up occasionally and silently to inspect us at close quarters.

The female and infant below had just taken a dust bath. Here and there the savanna is traversed by small rivers, the edges of which support lush vegetation that attracts a wide variety of birds. Here we saw cormorants in abundance and predators such as the fish eagle below.

Nearby was a black ibis. Dominating the savanna live the great feline predators of which the masters are the lion, leopard and cheetah. Here are an old lion and its mate with two of their cubs. Some large feline predators are widely distributed in the Old World. On a visit to the south of Saudi Arabia I found a dead caracal seen below , a widely distributed feline related to the African golden cat and the serval, hanging in a tree near an illicit plantation of Kat, a widely used psychostimulant.

Herds of buffalo were abundant mainly in the hills above the Rift Valley.
